Hi all. So my lil brother is 11 and has been interested in watching anime with me for a looong time now.
So far we've watched some ghibli movies, The Disastrous Life of Saiki K, Mob Psycho 100 and are working on Squid Girl.
He lost interest with Blue Exorcist, My Hero Academia, Assassination Classroom and Death Note.

He's told me he really mostly likes comedy stuff, but also loves action scenes and drama to keep his focus lol. Mob Psycho is his favorite so far. He also REALLY loves most ghibli movies.

Anything with strong alcohol/drunkness mentions are a definite no for personal reasons; especially if its a plot point. Also a lot of fanservice/sexual stuff makes him uncomfortable, but if it's infrequent enough it's not a huge problem.

Also he can't read fast enough to keep up with subtitles.

I'm struggling to find something we can enjoy together; any suggestions!
Thanks!!

~J

If he's into something like Pokémon, I'd recommend Cardcaptor Sakura.
The magical cards in this show are a lot like Pokémon as each have their own powers and minds and the main character has to capture each of them.
My nephew is as big of a Pokémon fan as I was and he enjoyed the first couple of episodes of this anime that I showed him!
(It meant a lot to me because I had grown up with the original manga and watched some of the anime during my preteen years haha)

I don't know a single boy that age who dislikes robots or scifi, so I think he may enjoy these:

Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Mazinkaiser (does feature some raunchier comedy in some of the episodes, recommend screening it first)

Macross (it's a little hard to track down, but there is an uncut dub of this. Avoid the Robotech version as much as possible)
Overman King Gainer (the first few episodes are a little fast pace and there's one or two raunchy scenes with a certain character but it's not too bad overall)
The Big O

And as a separate rec I highly recommend Yu Yu Hakusho, it's an essential classic.

The anime I loved at that age and definitely shaped me and still love today: One Piece, Digimon, Detective Conan, Sailor Moon (I see that Digimon is one of your favorite anime, so you HAVE to get him to like it!)

One Punch Man is really funny and exciting

I'm appalled that he lost interest with Assassination Classroom though! haha

The Pet Girl of Sakurasou is one of my favourite anime, and from looking at the taste your brother has, he might also enjoy this one. It's a slice of life/romance/comedy and, seeing that your brother will be going into high school soon, this anime may get him excited for it.

I'd suggest just trying shows like One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball, and Yu Yu Hakusho. They're so popular and widely known because they just appeal to a lot of people--especially children.

- Fullmetal Alchemist. Not Brotherhood, since the rating is uped to 17+ and has a more serious tone. Also, the dub is superb. Don't know if this will fit your brother's taste but might as well check that out?
- School Rumble. Dub is also great.
- Daily Lives of High School Boys is hilarious! I highly recommend this one, but I really don't know if this has a dub sadly.

I have a very picky little brother, who has on and off watched anime with us since he was about your brother's age. Has he seen https://myanimelist.net/anime/457/Mushishi?q=mushishi ? even at a young age it was my bro's favorite thing, closer to a atmospheric ghibli movie but without the bright charm, and not like something with plenty of action or comedy though, so im not sure if it would bore him or not. but a no worries family friendly watch of a lovely show! (There IS one episode about sake makers, but nothing about drunkeness, little references to a sip from a of sake cup throughout the show idk if thats part of what you're avoiding or not but thought id mention) Sadly only season 1 is dubbed, but as its episodic you dont necessarily need to see the second season unless you were invested by then.

https://myanimelist.net/anime/25013/Akatsuki_no_Yona?q=yona Yona is pretty clean, not too overly comedic but still pretty funny, and has action. my brother didnt lose interest but everyones different

https://myanimelist.net/anime/5114/Fullmetal_Alchemist__Brotherhood good amounts of drama, action, and comedy. i consider it clean but i dont know how much violence your ok with showing him? its definitely not attack on titan level, but id say it can be a bit more graphic at times than, fairy tail or hero academy. not dramatically so or anything and not all the time but just wanted to say. Great story and might be fun to watch with siblings as the focus is on two brothers.

(almost forgot this one) https://myanimelist.net/anime/35557/Houseki_no_Kuni_TV action/drama, and recently got a dub. clean as can be since theyre not human so no strong profanity, alcohol, or fan service. doesnt have a comedy genre but it has a bit of a sense of humor! more about the drama than anything though. my bro, mr i dont have any favorites or strong opinions went out of his way to tell me he thought it was really fun, so if that means anything to ya LOL smh.

Dennou Coil is a sci-fi mystery story with a cast of ten-year-olds. It's one of my top shows, and it has a dub.

Moribito, Guardian of the Spirit is an historical fantasy with an excellent twelve-year-old boy as one of the two main characters. He grows from a pampered young prince into a fine young man.

I don't think either of these streams legally at the moment.

MIX isn't anywhere near as good a story as the same author's Cross Game, but that has no dub. MIX has a dub that streams at Funimation. Both shows feature boys playing high-school baseball.

Noein is a great show with a terrible dub. The main cast are twelve-year-olds caught in a war between parallel universes. On Funimation.

Juuni Kokuki ("The Twelve Kingdoms") is a classic isekai story about a high-school girl who is whisked to a fantasy world and discovers her true fate. Amazon is now carrying the dub; the sub is on Crunchyroll. It's a bit bloody in spots, but nothing like Vinland Saga or other shows oriented to adults. The opposition is mostly monsters, too, though ones controlled by humans.

Akagami no Shirayuki-hime ("Snow White with the Red Hair") may be too much of a romance to hold his interest, but Zen is a pretty cool prince. Dub streams at Funimation.

There is the epic that is Hikaru no Go which follows Hikaru from age eight to eighteen. The Go matches are remarkably dramatic for a board game I only vaguely understand. The whole series is dubbed and streams at Viz: https://www.viz.com/watch/streaming/media/hikaru-no-go-episode-1/1167/dub

In the subtitled-only department, you might want to try Uchuu Kyoudai ("Space Brothers") about two brothers who want to become astronauts. Lots of the story takes place at NASA in Houston. On Crunchyroll.

The other subbed show I'll suggest is GeGeGe no Kitarou (2018). It airs on Sunday mornings at 9 am so you'd think it's a "kids' show." It is if you think episodes about suicidal mothers who enlist supernatural beasts to assassinate their enemies are for kids. Some weeks I watch in amazement thinking there are ten-year-olds in Japan eating their natto and toast while watching Kitarou. It's on Crunchyroll.

I think Gurren Lagann might be good for him to try. The plot wasn't all that hard to understand and the actions is good. Although, it lacks comedy i think it's worth to try.

I'd recommend:

Haikyuu!! - it has a lot of sports action so i don't think your brother would get bored, it's also really funny

One Punch Man - it does have an R-17+ rating for violence & profanity tho (i don't remember anything in it that seemed to be that bad tho, but maybe i just didn't notice it?)

Naruto - a classic

Sword Art Online - i think this show started out amazing and had such an interesting and exciting premise but i personally lost a lot of interest after the two main characters started to play house (but i know i'm not in the majority with this, so you and your brother might not mind) <- also sorry for the slight spoiler if you haven't already seen it *Edit: it's been pointed out that SAO might not be the best recommendation so maybe not watch that?

Noragami

Sakamoto Desu ga? - i don't really like this show but it's sort similar to Saiki K, tho this show is a little darker than Saiki K, both having a main character that's kind of above everyone else and who just breeze through everything (Saiki K is far better tho) - also i'm only recommending this because a lot of other people do like it and you and your brother might be among those people

I'm not sure if all of these shows are available with eng dub tho, since i never watch dub myself, so you'll just have to check that for yourself - but i hope some of these recs were helpful

thank you everybody! I'm going to look into one punch man especially but thank you all for your suggestions!

My brother's okay with violence and whatnot and a lot of your recommendations (for the most part) looked super good but I'm going to wait until he's a bit older so he can hold his attention on quieter/less flashy shows haha.

To brush over the arguing, I was an eleven-year-old boy at one point or another (and still feel like I am still to this day!) so I believe that I am uniquely qualified to give my two cents.

I think that your brother may enjoy Haikyuu because it's a very light-hearted comedy with a redemption story: something most pre-teens would enjoy. If he's relatively mature, you might consider introducing him to Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai because it maintains some soft romance plot points intertwined with the characters being extra awkward and having the most outrageous imaginary battles.

Outside of my immediate recollection there are also Shirabako, Noragami, and K-On which may be good picks depending on his (and your) interests, but I can't comment on how appropriate any of these are (bar K-On) because it's been multiple years since I have seen them.

On the contrary, there are definitely some series listed in this thread that aren't entirely appropriate for children which people have already discussed in detail. Beyond those already discussed, I would probably avoid SAO for the rape connotations in the second cour and Alicization being especially graphic at times.

Inuyasha
Trigun (there are drunk scenes so be careful tho)
Magic Knight Rayearth
Azumanga Daioh
Naruto
Digimon Adventure
Digimon Tamers
Angelic Layer

Slayers is also worth a look but I got into that later.

Answering OP's question, most popular shounens might work. Obvious ones: Gintama, OPM, Jojo, FMA, HxH, Haikyuu. Konosuba (though a bit more on fanservice), Trigun. Maybe K-on, Hinamatsuri for SoL ones. Asobi Asobase, Danshi Koukousei no (Nichijou) could be more comedy central.

@MikhailTheGreat Damn didn't remember that part in SAO, if i did i def wouldn't rec it. Like i said, i didn't pay that much attention after they started to play family and it's been a long time since i've watched it - so i mostly just remember how much i loved the beginning and how much i disliked the middle to ending <-can't remember any details.
So if that's the case then I prob wouldn't recommend that - thank you for pointing it out
